We understand that our commitment to achieving excellence cannot be reached through financial results alone. We therefore also concentrate on our core values, our reputation and the impact we have on the environment of which we are a part.
Unum's corporate responsibility programme addresses the responsibilities we have for our own workforce and for the communities and environment around us. We benefit from working in partnership with others from the public, private and voluntary sectors both locally and nationally. We are also passionate about promoting good practice throughout UK industry and achieve this by collaborating with other companies through our membership of Business in the Community, the Corporate Responsibility Group and the London Benchmarking Group.
Proactive in the Community
Unum is committed to investing a percentage of its UK pre-tax profit in the community. In 2006, we contributed over £700,000 through charitable donations, social sponsorships and the value of our volunteers.
We are a Gold Card member of the Employer's Forum on Disability and have sponsored a variety of initiatives on issues of disability and employment with organisations including RADAR, RNID and Disability Alliance.
Our continued support of Beginnings, a coalition of employers, service providers, and not-for-profit organisations who have come together with the aim of getting more disabled people into the workplace, underpins our belief in the contribution that disabled people can make to the world of work in both social and economic terms.
Volunteering
Unum people currently contribute more than 700 company supported days effort working with community partners, mainly in the field of disability.
One hundred and fifty staff recently took part in 'Le Jog', a relay running event, sponsored by Unum for the fifth year, which raised £40,000 for SeeAbility.
Teams from Unum regularly carry out gardening and decorating work but we also seek to extend the sharing of our specific business skills, including those of our most senior managers.
Diversity
We aim to broaden the make up of our own workforce to ensure that we reflect both our customers and communities. We have set ourselves, and achieved, goals in the areas of disability, ethnic diversity, age profile and women in management.
