Claims

Our claims philosophy

Since 2005, we have embraced what is known as the biopsychosocial model. This model seeks to look further than just the medical reasons behind an individual’s incapacity; giving equal importance to the powerful psychological and social elements that are often overlooked.

We have produced three publications; Enhancing, Enabling and Evolving, which talk about the influence that the biopsychosocial model has had on our thinking. These publications can be viewed or downloaded on our Claims Reports literature page.

Our claims structure

Our claims department now consists of over 130 staff, located across our offices in Dorking and Basingstoke. Both locations continue to be served by their own Insurance Nurse Specialist and Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant.

During 2006, we paid total benefit claims of £285 million - of which more than £191 million related to income protection claims.

Processing a claim

Your Unum protection cover provides either a lump sum pay out (in the event of death or the diagnosis of a pre-defined medical condition) or a replacement income if an individual suffers a long-term illness or injury.

Whether your claim relates to a group or to an individual product, processing the claim should be a simple process. Find out how to make a claim with our brief step-by-step guide.

For more detailed information on how we process claims, you can also visit our Claims Guides literature page.
