Second Year Success for Unum Hosting Fit for Work, Fit For Life

13th October 2008

This year's Fit for Work, Fit for Life conference hosted by Unum, the UK’s disability insurer, enjoyed a bumper crowd as representatives from a wide range of UK industries came together to discuss some of the most pertinent issues in the workplace.

The event, held in association with Healthy Office Working and Maria Lallemant, an Ergonomics specialist, took place on the 2nd September at the Royal Holloway College, University of London, Egham, Surry, focused on accommodating and retaining employees, enabling them to work effectively and productively in the workplace.

Guest speakers included Professor Michael O’Donnell, chief medical officer at Unum; Bob Grove, Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health; Peter Buckle, Director of Ergonomics at the Robens Centre for Public Health and Elaine Chamberlain, Chartered Occupational Psychologist from CognisGroup.

Topics that were covered ranged from ergonomics, visual impairment and accommodating the workplace to ensure safe and effective working for the larger worker, to, the older worker, reducing stress and legal issues for employers to be aware of when considering disability in the workplace.

Elaine Cook, Open Door Manager at Unum, said:

This year’s event brought some important issues to the fore and we were delighted that there was such a great turnout on the day! The issues that were discussed proved to be a complete success and an eye-opener as to the types of problems currently faced by employers.

We’re very much looking forward now to planning next year’s Fit for Work, Fit for Life conference, which hopefully will be as equally successful as this year’s.
