Workmatters celebrates first anniversary of UK’s inaugural Disability Management Examination

9th September 2008

15 candidates awarded qualification following 2008 exam

Workmatters, a sister organisation to Unum, the UK’s leading disability insurer, is pleased to announce the results of its 2008 Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) examination. The CDMP - an international certification administered by the International Disability Management Standards Council - celebrates its first anniversary with the success of 15 candidates who graduated this year.

The graduates join over 700 other Certified Disability Management Professionals worldwide.  The CDMP certification is offered to UK professionals who provide return-to-work and rehabilitation management services.

The qualification was developed by the National Institute of Disability Management and Research, a Canadian foundation committed to reducing the human, social and economic cost of disability to workers, employers and society.  It provides an internationally recognised professional qualification for practitioners overseeing or delivering return-to-work services, using as its base the International Labour Organisation’s Disability Management Standard.  The Certification is also linked to the occupational rehabilitation training programme which WorkMatters has introduced into a number of UK universities.

The exam has been available in Canada since 2003 and Germany since 2004.  Ireland and Australia are joining the UK in offering the examination for the first time last year. Applicants come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including: psychology, nursing and occupational therapy, health and medicine.

Joy Reymond, Head of Rehabilitation Services at Unum, said:

We’re thrilled that so many of our colleagues were successful in obtaining this qualification.   We’re hoping to attract further candidates to the course for next year, which is designed to assess the knowledge and application of best practice in the field of occupational rehabilitation.

We hope that the occupational rehabilitation training programme and the CDMP certification will deliver increased knowledge and expertise to the candidates, which in turn should result in them helping more people back to work.

Bal Rai, Certified Disability Management Professional from Unum, said:

I’m pleased that I was offered this great opportunity to further enhance my understanding of occupational rehabilitation and to have graduated!  Over the past few years, the interest in occupational rehabilitation has increased, and the need for effective interventions has become evident and indeed urgent. The work I had to undertake to gain this qualification has really helped to cement the knowledge I had already gained through my work with Unum.

Applications to sit the exam, which consists of a multiple choice scenario-based paper, that must be received four weeks prior to the examination date.  Candidates will need to have a combination of practical experience in occupational rehabilitation and relevant qualifications in order to sit the exam.  The certification is overseen by the International Disability Management Standards Council and the exam is offered on an annual basis.

For further details on the qualification or for an application pack, candidates should contact workmatters@unumprovident.co.uk or call 01306 874 257.
