Day out at Hever Castle for Members of the Banstead Centre

5th September 2008

Nine members of The Banstead Day Centre recently enjoyed a day out at Hever Castle in Kent thanks to volunteers from Dorking based disability insurer Unum.

The Banstead Centre – a registered charity operating in partnership with Reigate and Banstead Borough Council – celebrates its 24th year in 2008 and offers a day centre where members can socialise and join in the many activities available for them.

Many, due to their circumstances, would not often get out on day trips and so eight PA’s from Unum – which encourages its employees to undertake volunteering projects in their local communities – recently arranged a day trip for them at Hever Castle in Kent.

The Unum volunteers acted as individual “buddies” for The Banstead Centre members for the outing to Hever Castle which included a tour of the gardens and lunch at the restaurant by the lake. Some were also able to tour the castle while others visited the gift shop.

Isobel Holmes, Manager of The Banstead Centre, said of the outing:

Personally the thing that stands out for me, was the amount of laughter that could be heard throughout the day from both the members and the wonderful staff from Unum. I can confidently say that although it rained during the day, it brought a lot of sunshine to nine very happy people who will live on the memory for a long time to come.
